Lunchtime Webinar | Near-Field Blast Loading: Challenges, Unknowns and Opportunities - Sam Rigby, The University of SheffieldAdd to Calendar
|TITLE:||Near-Field Blast Loading: Challenges, Unknowns and Opportunities|
|SPEAKER:||Sam Rigby, The University of Sheffield|
|DURATION:||1 hour (45 min + Q&A)|
|TIME:||13.00 to 14.00 (BST)|
|ABSTRACT:||Near-field loading presents a considerable challenge to the blast protection engineering community. Here, pressure loads can be well in excess of material strengths, and they rapidly decay with both distance and time, resulting in incredibly short duration, highly concentrated loads. Until recently, physical measurements of near-field blast loading were not possible, and as such the tools that have been developed (both to predict the loading and to subsequently design structures and systems subjected to this loading) are not informed by direct observation and are of unknown validity and accuracy. Dr Rigby and colleagues in the Blast and Impact Research Group at the University of Sheffield have developed experimental apparatus to directly measure near-field loading distributions. This talk will present some findings from ongoing studies in this area. In particular, it will focus on exploring some experimental insights which have shed light on the complex behaviour in the immediate vicinity of an explosive detonation, consequences for structural response, and advanced data-driven machine learning methods to predict this.|
FABIG WEBINAR SERIES
We will continue to organise lunchtime webinars every two weeks whilst working life remains disrupted by measures to combat the COVID-19 epidemic. Such measures either prohibit or make inadvisable large meetings such as our Technical Meetings. We are still looking for presentations for our series of lunchtime Webinars and as such, please do not hesitate to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you or one of your colleagues would like to give a presentation at one of the forthcoming FABIG Lunchtime Webinars.
Please note that you are required to log in to register for FABIG events. If you do not have an account on the FABIG Website, create one here.
This event is for FABIG members only.
