ABSTRACT: | This webinar will present the development and application of numerical and analytical models to predict the transient loading exerted on structures by impinging pressure and shock waves of variable intensity and duration. The cases of isolated box-like objects and circular cylinders have been investigated in detail. A numerical solver was used to predict the transient flow around the object and the consequent pressure on the object’s surface. An analytical model was developed to predict the transient loading history on all faces of a box-like object and the transient flow around the cylinder; the analytical model was found to be in good agreement with the numerical predictions. Practical examples of application of the model to typical structures used in turbomachinery packages will be presented; it will be demonstrated that the proposed analytical modelling technique provides less conservative predictions than those made according to existing guidelines. The role of fluid-structure interaction for some simple structures will be briefly explored and a new analytical framework will be presented to study the details of the structural response of a fully clamped beam made from an elastic-plastic material. |
FABIG WEBINAR SERIES
We will be organising lunchtime webinars every two weeks whilst working life remains disrupted by measures to combat the COVID-19 epidemic. Such measures either prohibit or make inadvisable large meetings such as our Technical Meetings. We are still looking for presentations for our series of lunchtime Webinars and as such, please do not hesitate to contact us at fabig@steel-sci.com if you or one of your colleagues would like to give a presentation at one of the forthcoming FABIG Lunchtime Webinars.
