This FABIG Newsletter comprises the following:

  • Editorial: '2-day FABIG Technical Meeting with live fire & explosion demonstrations to be held in April 2023'
    G. Vannier - The Steel Construction Institute (SCI)
  • Risk management over the life cycle of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles
    P.A. Christensen1,4, P.A. Anderson2,4, G.D.J. Harper2,4, S.M. Lambert1,4, W. Mrozik1,4, M.A. Rajaeifar1,4, M.S. Wise1,4 and O. Heidrich1,3,4, 1Newcastle University, 2University of Birmingham, 3Newcastle University, 4Faraday Institution (ReLIB project)
This paper considers safety issues over the life cycle of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) used in electric vehicles including their end of life disposal, potential reuse in second-life applications, recycling and unscheduled end of life. Incidents, potential failure mechanisms, risks associated with LIBs and risk management systems are described. Current regulatory and information gaps are also discussed.
  • Numerical and experimental characterization of high energy density 21700 lithium-ion battery fires
    C.M.R. Vendra1, A.V. Shelke1, J.E.H. Buston2, J. Gill2, D. Howard2, E. Read2, A. Abaza3, B. Cooper3 and J.X. Wen1, 1University of Warwick, 2The Health and Safety Executive, 3Jaguar Land Rover
This paper describes numerical and experimental studies conducted for high energy density 4.8 Ah 21700 cylindrical NMC LIBs at 100 % SOC in order to develop a viable predictive tool for simulating LIB fires, quantifying the heat release rate and temperature evolution during thermal runaway.
  • Numerical study of premixed gas explosion in a 1-m channel partly filled with 18650 cell-like cylinders with experiments
    M. Henriksen1, K. Vaagsaether1, J. Lundberg1, S. Forseth2, D. Bjerketvedt1, 1University of South-Eastern Norway, 2Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI)
This paper describes a study evaluating the prediction accuracy of the open-source CFD combustion model/solver XiFoam by comparing numerical simulations and experiments of premixed gas explosions in a 1 m explosion channel partly filled with 18650 cell-like cylinders.
  • Mitigating the hazards and risks associated with lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage Systems
    R. Stokes, S. Berg, R. Sebastian and G. Shelton, BakerRisk
This article provides an overview of Li-ion battery hazards for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and describes BESS designs, failure mechanisms and mitigation strategies.
