BREAKING NEWS: REGISTER NOW FOR OUR NEXT 2-DAY FABIG TECHNICAL MEETING | 19 & 20 MARCH 2024 IN LONDON, UK & VIA WEBCAST

WHAT IS FABIG?

FABIG was formed in the wake of the Piper Alpha disaster in 1992 at the instigation of both government and industry to collate, appraise and disseminate knowledge on hydrocarbon fires and explosions, and act as a leading forum for discussion of fire and blast issues in relation to the design and operation of offshore and onshore facilities.
Over the years, FABIG broadened its scope beyond hydrocarbon fire and explosions and now covers all industrial fire and explosion hazards.
Our mission is to be the globally recognised centre of excellence for the sharing of technical knowledge and practical guidance on fire and explosion hazards.
HISTORY

The Piper Alpha disaster (1988) led to many changes in the way the offshore oil and gas industry deals with explosion and fire hazards. As both industry and regulator grappled with these issues, significant gaps in knowledge were identified and many joint industry research projects were undertaken to increase our understanding of hydrocarbon fires and explosions.

FABIG was created in 1992 at the instigation of both government and industry to collate, appraise and disseminate knowledge on hydrocarbon fires and explosions, and act as a leading forum for discussion of fire and blast issues in relation to the design and operation of offshore and onshore facilities.

Over the years, FABIG broadened its scope beyond hydrocarbon fire and explosions and now covers all industrial fire and explosion hazards.

MISSION AND OBJECTIVES

Our mission is to be the globally recognised centre of excellence for the sharing of technical knowledge and practical guidance on fire and explosion hazards.

To this end, FABIG has a network of leading industry experts and researchers to keep abreast of current technical challenges and ongoing research. Technical information is disseminated to FABIG members via quarterly Technical Meetings and Newsletters. Technical Notes are published to provide practising engineers with detailed guidance on challenging fire and explosion design issues.

SCOPE OF ACTIVITIES

In the early days of FABIG’s formation, our activities focused on hydrocarbon fire and explosion issues on offshore installations. Over time, our scope has broadened to cover the design and operation of industrial facilities with potential fire and/or explosion hazards. These include offshore installations, onshore petrochemical and chemical facilities, etc.

Emerging topics such as hydrogen, design of floating production facilities, LNG, integrity management, life extension, carbon capture & storage, and human factors have also been addressed by FABIG over the years.

GOVERNANCE

Our activities are overseen by a Steering Committee drawn from the FABIG member organisations. The Steering Committee meets at least twice a year to review our activities, advise on ongoing research and technical issues faced by the industry and suggest topics for Technical Notes, Technical Meetings and Newsletters.

COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS

FABIG has developed links with other organisations to facilitate the cross-industry sharing of fire & blast related knowledge. Such collaboration includes mutual promotion of activities and periodic organisation of joint events such as Technical Meetings and conferences
